Finishing Tips

Our decks are sold completely unfinished meaning the wood is bare and natural.  At a minimum you should seal the wood to prevent it from absorbing moisture.  You can do that by using a spray on clear coat sealer or finish available from any hardware store.

If you want to stain the deck, do not seal the wood first.  Simply brush or wipe on whatever color stain you want and let it completely dry.  Sand the deck lightly with very fine sandpaper and wipe it clean.  Then spray on several layers of clear coat.

If you want to add some cool stripes or other designs you must first seal the wood.  Spray on two coats of some type of clear finish.  Lightly sand after it is dry.

Spray on two coats of clear varnish to seal the wood, then sand lightly with very fine sand paper to smooth the surface.

Use blue masking tape or vinyl graphics transfer tape to mask off your stripe design.  Use Krylon or similar spray paint to color the stripes.  Spray several very light coats of paint letting the paint dry slightly  between coats.  Remove the tape before the paint is completely dry.

After the paint is completely dry and you're done decorating the deck apply several more very light coats of clear finish.  If you spray the clear on too heavy the paint may crinkle up and peel.

I applied three very light coats of red gloss spray paint.
After the paint is completely dry, apply several more coats of clear finish.

You can buy grip tape at your local skate shop or find it online, we don't sell it here.  Another technique is to lightly sprinkle clear sand on top of your still wet clear finish.  Then apply some more clear on top of that.
